Star Wars: Empire at War (updated 2-13)

Post by Crow »

Attempting to download the demo right now but I like how Star Wars a Empire at War looks. If it doesn't suck as bad as Force Commander I might have a new favorite game.

Played the demo and by far its all I wanted in a RTS game. I really liked ST Armada and starcraft and this has some elements of both. The space combat makes sense, fighters have a use and capital ships have a use.

Y-Wings are actually used as bombers and such. Gives a good feel to a Starwars commander type game.

I think the game is released this week, which is perfect since this week is a pay period. I played a hacked out demo and by far the rebellion seems to be the strongest side in capital ship engagements, but I'll break it down a little bit.

Capital ships
Mon cal cruiser 1.
imp star 2.

All else are fodder for the big guns. Mon cal cruisers have a huge amount of firepower and a great little shield regain special. They carry no fighters so you've got to build and deploy them with your ships.

Imp Star has a set of ties, and a bomber. Basically it comes in for a near tie for power 1v1 between the two. Add in a couple fighters and the mon cal is tops even without bombers.

Support Ships.

Anti-fighter 1
meh 2

Anything that can light up a group of fighters is going to win a battle for you. corellian corvettes can use a engine boost to fly through a mess of stuff while blasting bombers... But of course all the support ships are fairly weak and drop under concentrated bomber/capital ship fire.

Fighters

sex-wing 1
bombers 2

Of course the x-wing is the lord of space, does it all and kicks some butt... but lose the anti-fighter wings and a set of bombers is going to rock capital ships straight into a flaming mess. Yes oh yes a balanced flight of fighters and bombers is key to a easy victory. The demo mission can pretty much be won by a 4 y-wing units and 5-6 x-wings it seems.

Who will win in this current situation?

Commanders will obviously use the recon units to thier fullest in this game, knowing fighter strength will be a major decision. Blowing up a space station is key since they call fighters and support ships through a battle. Blowing up the hanger is key to keeping support fighters and bombers off your capital ships who will take minimal damage from a single turbolaser turret compared to the pure firepower a bomber wing can deliver.

Rebs have a huge advantage with fighter backup being able to drop right in, dropping two sets of bombers after some of the fighters have been dealt with is the key to victory in most cases. Calling the right re-enforcements is also a key to victory, jumping into a bomber heavy system is going to end horribly, but dropping a few support ships in after your imp star or mon cal blows up will hopefully turn the tide.

Blowing up sub-components is awesome. Killing guns and shields actually does something, its forcing that siege tank in Starcraft to switch back to tank mode, you really limit a units power and ability the more you work it, dropping all the guns on a ship and moving on to the next allows you to live longer. Even when playing the computer I noticed that moving from one target to another helped a great deal when facing superior numbers.

Ground Combat.

AT-AT's are pure power but damn they blow up easy to anything with missles.

Basically ground combat seems to be hit or miss, I much prefer the space battles and would rather have the ground combat be less intensive, and rely less on blowing up a power generator and shield gen, since once those blow the game is pretty much over for the ground anyway.

Its kinda pointless, no strategy needed just ling rush with all your units and blow stuff up, drop Stormtroopers from the AT-AT when the special allows it and keep mowing down stuff. Concentrate fire and march on.

HERO UNITS

Boba Fett 1
All others 2

Slave 1 can wipe out a squadron of fighters like no ones business, drop a seismic charge and boom their gone, sic it on a bomber wing and watch it go bye bye. Pure carnage and a awesome little unit, its basically a mini fighter executioner, its a free unit from what I've seen and does the work of much larger ships.

All others, each are useful in their own ways, one of the imp ships has a hero that blows up a single sub component in like one hit, boom a gun is gone etc etc etc.

All others are useful on ground or space, ground heros it in space in little shuttles so if they jump in with a battle fleet they're sitting ducks. Makes it fun and worthwhile to split those fleets up a little for the safety of ground units.

I like this game but its just not fun playing the demo campaign and hacked campaigns over and over, I can't wait to play a living person and try some tricks. I'm going to get this one for sure and play the hell out of it. I think its a worth game to fill the void between SC1 and SC2 even if the ground game is tedious.

I didn't like the demo since it had some technical issues on my PC. Resolution problems, etc. I'll probably get the full game anyway, even though I'm not really an RTS dude.

First impressions...

The install reminds me of Star Trek Armada, some eye candy scenes of game play etc etc.

Thats all I've seen since the game causes the rig I'm on to reboot the second I get past the start button.

Awesome...

Realizing you're about to pwn someone then seeing a bunch of reinforcements just jump on top of you is something I won't ever get sick of seeing.

Dropping two wings of bombers on someones backside is just funny.
